Cloud Migration Strategies for 2024
Moving to the cloud is a significant step for any organization. It promises scalability, cost-efficiency, and flexibility. However, a successful migration requires careful planning and the right strategy.
Common Migration Strategies (The 6 Rs)
1. Rehosting (Lift and Shift)
Moving applications to the cloud without making changes. It's quick but doesn't take full advantage of cloud-native features.
2. Replatforming
Making a few optimizations to the cloud core in order to achieve some tangible benefit, but not otherwise changing the core architecture of the application.
3. Refactoring / Re-architecting
Re-imagining how the application is architected and developed, typically using cloud-native features. This is often driven by a strong business need to add features, scale, or performance.
4. Repurchasing
Moving to a different product, often a SaaS platform (e.g., moving from a legacy CRM to Salesforce).
5. Retiring
Identifying IT assets that are no longer useful and can be turned off.
6. Retaining
Keeping certain applications on-premise for now, often due to compliance or complexity reasons.
